In 1931, former Yunnan provincial governor Long Yun visited Shilin in his inspection tour, greatly enchanted by the exceptional beauty of the stone forest, he wrote two Chinese characters “Shi Lin” (Stone Forest) to name the forest-like landscape. Since then, “Stone Forest” became the place name of this special karst area. Also in 1931, Mr. Long Yun allocated fund to establish the Stone Forest Park, accordingly, a park management office established and some tourism facilities such as road were built, marking the beginning of the park history.
